Cocobay Resort Antigua promises ocean views, private plunge pools, and a laid-back escape. But is it as good as it looks? This review and tour break down what actually stands out, and what to know before you book.

Cocobay Resort Antigua Barbuda Review

Antigua has no shortage of high-end beach resorts, but Cocobay sits in a league of its own. Not because it’s the biggest or the flashiest—it’s neither—but because it leans fully into the Caribbean fantasy without trying too hard. Think private bungalows, ocean views from nearly everywhere, and a vibe that’s more barefoot and relaxed than overpolished. But is it actually worth the price tag?

After spending a week there, I have plenty to say—the good, the bad, and the “you should know this before you book”.

Where is Cocobay Resort & What to Expect

Cocobay sits on the quiet west coast of Antigua, about 35 minutes from the airport, tucked between rolling green hills and two beaches. There are no high-rises, no crowds, just pastel bungalows spilling down a hillside toward the ocean. Cocobay Resort is adults-only and mostly all-inclusive, yet the entire place feels refreshingly uncommercial. It’s not corporate-owned; the resort is independently managed, which is probably why it still has a personality instead of just a brand strategy.

The first thing you notice when you arrive? Everything is open-air. The lobby is more of a breezy terrace with panoramic views of the water, and check-in feels less like a transaction and more like someone welcoming you into their beach house. There’s no over-the-top luxury here, no gold-plated details or marble lobbies, but rather just a lot of effortless, well-executed charm.

Who stays here? Mostly honeymooners and couples. This place is all about quiet luxury, long lunches, and pretending emails don’t exist. The vibes are nice enough that you’ll want to dress up for dinner, but casual enough that no one cares if you show up barefoot. The staff are genuinely friendly, and the entire place feels designed to make you slow down.

Beaches of Cocobay: Where to Sunbathe

For a resort that leans so hard into the barefoot luxury aesthetic, you’d expect Cocobay to have a prime beach setup, and you wouldn’t be wrong. It’s perched between two beaches: Valley Church Beach and Little Ffryes Beach, each offering a completely different experience.

Valley Church Beach – The One With the Resort Service

Valley Church Beach sits right below the resort, and this is where Cocobay guests get the full beach setup: loungers, umbrellas, and drink service straight from the resort. There’s no aggressive towel reservation culture here, as there’s plenty of space, and most people split their time between the beach and the infinity pools.

The water is calm and warm, exactly the kind of thing you imagine when you daydream about moving to the Caribbean. One thing to note is that Valley Church Beach isn’t private. It’s technically public (as are all beaches in Antigua), so you’ll see some locals, cruise ship passengers, and the occasional beach vendor. It’s never crowded, but it’s not an empty, untouched paradise either.

Little Ffryes Beach – The Quieter One

A ten-minute walk from the resort, Little Ffryes Beach is the move if you want something even more secluded. No loungers, no resort service, just soft sand, shallow water, and a stretch of beach that feels like your own private island.

This is the spot for a quiet swim or a no-distractions beach walk. The lack of amenities means most guests don’t wander over, but if you’re up for a short, easy walk, it’s absolutely worth it.

The Rooms: Beachfront Bungalows & Private Pools

Cocobay’s rooms are bungalow-style, breezy, and designed for people who actually want to look at the ocean. There are no high-rise hotel blocks, and no generic layouts. Instead, the entire place feels like a tropical village, where every room is its own little escape.

Regardless of which category you book, expect pastel-painted wooden cottages with high ceilings, rustic-chic vibes, plantation-style shutters, and balconies with hammocks

Inside, you get king-size beds, mosquito nets (a necessity in the tropics, although I personally didn’t see a single mosquito), air conditioning, and mini-fridges stocked with drinks. There are no TVs, and that’s intentional.

There are several room types, ranging from cozy to full-on honeymoon indulgence:

  • Standard or Garden View Cottages – The entry-level rooms. No ocean views, but they have the same aesthetic as the higher categories. Good if you’re on a budget and plan to spend most of your time outside.
  • Deluxe Cottages – Same setup but with ocean views. This is the best balance between price and experience, as you’ll wake up to the sea, but you won’t pay premium rates.
  • Deluxe Pool Cottage – Like the Deluxe, but with a plunge pool on the deck. However, be warned, not all have great ocean views. Some mostly overlook the resort’s inner paths, which isn’t exactly what you expect from a “pool with a view” setup. If this matters to you, confirm the exact location of your cottage before booking.
  • Premium Pool Suite – As the name suggests, this is where comfort meets top-tier views. These suites offer private plunge pools and guaranteed ocean vistas. If you’re looking for the best views without going all-in on the most expensive categories, this is the sweet spot.
  • Waterfront Pool Suite – These suites put you right on the oceanfront, with plunge pools that feel like an extension of the sea itself. If you want to wake up to nothing but blues, this is the category to book.
  • Azure Waterfront Pool Suite –With only few of these available in the entire resort, they come with the most spectacular oceanfront locations, VIP-level concierge service, and the kind of setup that makes every other guest a little jealous.

Dining at Cocobay

All-inclusive resort dining can usually go one of two ways: overpriced mediocrity or genuinely great food that makes you want to linger. Thankfully, Cocobay leans toward the latter. While it doesn’t have a buffet-style setup or a sprawling list of restaurants, what it does offer is thoughtfully prepared meals, solid cocktails, and some of the best sunset views you’ll ever have.

Rafters: Where Most of Your Meals Happen

Rafters is the main all-inclusive restaurant at Cocobay, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s a mix of à la carte and daily rotating menus, which keeps things fresh but means you don’t have endless choices at every meal. The food is Caribbean-inspired, well-executed, and plated with a little more finesse than your standard all-inclusive fare.

Breakfast? Think fresh tropical fruit, omelettes, pancakes, french toast, pastries, and strong coffee.
Lunch? Light options like salads, tacos, wraps, and grilled seafood.
Dinner? A rotating menu that usually includes options like fresh-caught fish, steak, pasta, and Caribbean-style curries.

Bars & Drinks: Small but Well-Done

There’s one main all-inclusive bar and a few spots to grab a cocktail, all keeping things simple but well-crafted.

The cocktails lean tropical but not in a gimmicky way, think fresh-squeezed juices, house-made syrups, and rum-forward drinks that actually taste like they belong in the Caribbean. The bartenders know what they’re doing, so if you go off-menu and ask for something special, you’ll probably end up with an amazing drink.

An additional coffee shop is open in the morning and early afternoon, serving Starbucks-worthy drinks and smoothies.

Sheer Rocks: The Showstopper

Sheer Rocks, perched dramatically on a cliffside within the resort, is consistently ranked as one of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. Unlike the other dining spot, this one isn’t included in the all-inclusive rate and it’s not just for hotel guests—locals, yacht-hoppers, and well-informed travellers all come here for long, indulgent lunches and sunset dinners.

The setup consists of a string of open-air dining pavilions with private plunge pools and a ridiculous ocean view. The menu focuses on Mediterranean-Caribbean fusion, with fresh seafood, locally sourced ingredients, and plates that look almost too pretty to eat. If you’re staying at Cocobay, you’ll still need a reservation—this place books out fast.

Pools, Spa & Extras

There are two infinity pools, both with uninterrupted ocean views. They’re not oversized, but they also never feel packed. The upper pool tends to be quieter, good for stretching out with a book or just zoning out. The lower pool is a bit more social—not loud, just more people chatting and having drinks by the bar. Cocobay’s Indigo Spa is also very straightforward: a few treatment rooms, an open-air setup, and a solid massage menu. Swedish, deep tissue, aromatherapy, and body scrubs are the main options. It’s not a luxury wellness retreat, but if you want a good massage with fresh air and no fuss, it does the job.

Other extras that make a difference:

  • Morning yoga sessions are offered on select days.
  • A small gym is equipped with cardio machines and a fully stocked rack of dumbells.
  • Kayaks & paddleboards are free for guests to take out.
  • Scattered hammocks ideal for post-lunch naps.
  • Live music in the evenings, just enough to add some atmosphere.

Excursions from Cocobay Resort Antigua

If you want to explore beyond the resort, Antigua has some seriously good day trips, and the location makes it easy to get around without much effort. The staff at Cocobay can easily suggest and book excursions for you, but nothing feels forced, so if you’d rather do nothing, that’s always on the table too.

Shirley Heights

If you do only one excursion, make it to Shirley Heights on a Sunday night. The old military lookout turns into a full-on Caribbean barbecue and live music scene, with steel drums, grilled seafood, and a crowd that’s a mix of locals and tourists. The sunset views over English Harbour are easily the best on the island, and it’s one of those places that lives up to the hype. The resort typically arranges transport, but you can also grab a taxi.

Sailing & Snorkeling

Antigua has 365 beaches, and while that’s a fun marketing slogan, the reality is that some of the best ones are only accessible by boat. There are plenty of half-day and full-day catamaran tours that leave from nearby Jolly Harbour, taking you to hidden coves, snorkeling spots, and sandbars with nobody else around.

If snorkeling is the goal, Cades Reef is the best option. Calm, clear water, plenty of marine life, and no crowds. It’s an easy half-day trip, and the resort can book it for you.

Exploring St. John’s

Antigua’s capital is small but lively, with colorful colonial buildings, busy markets, and a few worthwhile stops like St. John’s Cathedral and the local food spots at Heritage Quay. It’s not an all-day excursion, but if you want a break from the beach for a couple of hours, it’s a good option.

Final Review & Verdict: Is Cocobay Worth It?

Cocobay isn’t trying to be a flashy, all-inclusive mega-resort, and that’s exactly why it works. It’s small, intimate, and effortlessly cool, with the kind of atmosphere that makes you actually want to forget what day it is.

Who will love it? Couples, honeymooners, and anyone looking for a romantic, laid-back getaway. Travelers who care more about charm and location than endless amenities, and people who want a beachfront stay with killer views but no overcrowding.

Who might not? Anyone looking for a high-energy, party-centric resort. If you need clubs, DJs, and never-ending pool parties, look elsewhere. I also wouldn’t suggest it to travelers who expect a massive spa, 10 dining options, and 24-hour room service. This isn’t that kind of place.

If you’re looking for a Caribbean escape that’s romantic, relaxed, and built for slow, scenic days by the water, Cocobay is absolutely worth it.
