So, without further ado, here are 10 compelling reasons why you should visit Japan this year—a list of unforgettable experiences that will leave you longing to return even before your trip is over.
10 Reasons Why You Should Visit Japan Right Now
1. Japan’s temples and shrines are truly incredible
The beautiful ancient Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines alone are reason enough to visit Japan. Kyoto, one of the best-preserved cities in Japan, is home to more than 2,000 Buddhist temples and shrines within the limits of the Kansai Region city. On the other hand, Nara is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some of the best temples in the country.
2. Japan is the cleanest country in the world
Japan has a strong culture of cleanliness, and its cities are extremely well-maintained. Public spaces, including streets, train or subway stations, and restrooms, are very clean. You will find that many workers, particularly drivers, wear pristine white gloves. Even the bustling city of Tokyo is so clean that everything looks brand new! Japan sets an example of a future where people respect their surroundings.
3. Japan is brimming with natural wonders
…and offers stunning landscapes across the country for people to admire. While many associate Japan with skyscrapers, bright neon lights, and advanced technology, the country has much more to offer. From the breathtaking Mount Fuji and the magnificent Arashiyama Bamboo Forest to the numerous temples, gardens, and rugged mountains, Japan is an ideal destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
4. Japanese culture is an absolute delight to explore
Japanese folks have a knack for creating whimsical cartoon versions of everyday items and making plastic food look unbelievably realistic. Their cuisine boasts the most unique and tantalizing flavors, and their music videos are oddly addictive. From banana slipcases to square watermelons, baby mops, and cuddle pillows, the Japanese have a knack for inventing quirky yet fascinating products. And let’s not forget about their high-tech toilets that talk to you, provide a gentle breeze for your bum, and even play music to help you unwind during your private moments. Yep, that was definitely a quirky experience.
5. Japanese public transportation is remarkably efficient
Despite the hustle and bustle of Tokyo rush hour, I really miss the convenience of commuting all over the city and country by train. I also deeply appreciated the impeccable punctuality of Japanese trains. During my travels, whether by local trains or Shinkansens, not once were they ever tardy. Just picture being in a place where a train scheduled for 8:30 actually arrives at 8:29 and departs at 8:30. It’s still mind-blowing, but in the most fantastic way imaginable.
6. Everything is cute in Japan
Japan’s cute culture is truly unique, with almost every major company boasting an adorable mascot. Even the Japanese police force has its own lovable character. Sociologists attribute this trend to “escapism,” a way for people to break free from the routine and indulge in fantasy. Artists see it as a reflection of Japanese aesthetic ideals. Ultimately, it’s clear that the Japanese have a genuine fondness for all things cute.
7. The cherry blossom season in Japan is absolutely captivating
…drawing travelers from all over the world to witness this breathtaking sight. Hanami parties are a cherished tradition, where people gather under the delicate pink blooms for 2-3 weeks to savor the ephemeral beauty of the sakura blossoms with their loved ones.
8. Japanese food is to die for
Japanese cuisine is undeniably amazing and should be at the top of your list when visiting Japan. The delicious food is a compelling reason to experience all that Japan has to offer. From small, hidden gems to renowned eateries, you’ll find the best Sushi, Sashimi, Donburi, Ramen, Udon, Kobe beef, and more. Even convenience stores like 7/11 offer high-quality food that will surprise and delight you. Did you know that Tokyo has more noodle shops than any other city in the world? Additionally, Japan boasts the highest number of three-star Michelin restaurants globally.
9. Japan is incredibly safe for solo travel
It’s recognized as one of the safest countries globally and the safest in Asia. According to a report by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, only 1.4% of the population has been victims of assault. Japan’s safety allows you to enjoy the vibrant nightlife, get carried away in central Tokyo, and still wake up with your wallet and phone intact.
10. Japanese people are exceptionally kind
Their politeness, graciousness, and remarkable ability to remember your name after just one meeting make interactions memorable. Despite language barriers, they will go to great lengths to assist you. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting incredible people in Japan, and saying goodbye to them was the most challenging part of leaving.
I’ve come across so many amazing things that you’re truly missing out on by not visiting Japan – 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a unique fashion culture, an exciting nightlife, insane food combination (wasabi Kit-Kat, anyone?). But what truly inspired me about Japan was its culture that values perfection.
What you’ll learn (and miss) from Japan and its people is their dedication to mastery in everything they do, whether it’s addressing global issues or making delicious noodles on a street corner.
